Where to stay in Zermatt: the short answer
Stay in the village centre if you want to walk to the first trains and lifts, on the mountain if you want the quiet and the early light, and in Täsch or Randa if you want a cheaper bed and accept a train ride at both ends of the day. Zermatt is car-free, so wherever you sleep, you arrive by train or park in Täsch.
This page gives no hotel prices. Rates change with dates, and we have no verified numbers. It does give the facts that matter for the choice: distances, how you get there and what is closed. Hotels are named only where the operator's own information is clear.

The areas compared
Pick by what you will do each morning.
| Area | Getting around | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Village centre | On foot to the station, the Gornergrat Railway and the museum | First-time visitors and early lifts | Busiest part of the village; Matterhorn views depend on the room |
| Winkelmatten | Residential quarter with chalets and holiday flats; the Findlerweg ends here | Families and groups who want an apartment | Check the walking distance to the station before booking |
| Riffelalp and Riffelberg | Gornergrat Railway to the Riffelalp or Riffelberg station | Quiet nights, sunrise and the Riffelsee walk | You depend on the railway timetable |
| Gornergrat summit | Gornergrat Railway to 3,100 m | Stars and a very early view | Very high, very few beds |
| Täsch | Shuttle train, 12 minutes, every 20 minutes | Budget travellers, drivers | Daily train ticket, fewer evening options |
| Randa | Train, 20 to 23 minutes | Hikers, the suspension bridge | Longer trips at both ends of the day |
The base stations sit close together. The Gornergrat Railway leaves from opposite the main station, and the base station of the Matterhorn Express cable car is also within walking distance, so a central room means a short walk in the morning.

Zermatt hotels on the mountain
Three places we can name, all reached by the Gornergrat Railway.
Riffelalp Resort 2222 m
Reached from the Riffelalp station of the Gornergrat Railway. A hotel tram is reported to run in summer only. The resort's opening dates for 2026/27 are not confirmed here, so check before planning a winter or late-autumn stay.
Riffelhaus 1853
On the Riffelberg at 2,582 metres, with a sun terrace and overnight stays. The Riffelsee path runs from Rotenboden to Riffelberg, 2.9 km in about an hour, so the hotel is a natural end point for that walk. The Bruder Klaus chapel is also on the Riffelberg.
3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat
Advertised as the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps at 3,100 metres. It has 22 rooms and 44 beds, was modernised in 2024 and added a Sky Lounge in December 2024. Guests can arrange a visit to the Stellarium, a research centre of the universities of Bern and Geneva.
Gornergrat guide →One practical point for all three: the Gornergrat Railway is closed completely from 2 to 14 November 2026 for construction work, and runs every 48 minutes from 15 to 27 November. A mountain stay in that window needs a direct answer from the hotel. At 3,100 metres, go slowly, drink plenty and come down if you feel unwell.
Matterhorn-view hotels: what we can and cannot say
A view depends on the room, so we do not promise one.
The Matterhorn is visible from the village and from the mountain stations, but the view from a room depends on its side and floor. A hotel on the Riffelberg is near the Riffelsee and its famous reflection. That is a statement about the location, not about your window. When you book, ask for a room that faces the Matterhorn and ask for it in writing. Keep in mind that clouds hide the peak on many days, and a view is only as good as the weather.
If the view is important, a cheaper approach works as well: sleep wherever suits you and spend a morning at the Riffelsee or on the Gornergrat. A return to the Gornergrat costs CHF 102 in winter 2026/27, according to the operator's June 2026 price list.
Cheaper bases: Täsch and Randa
Both are on the same railway line as Zermatt.

Täsch has about nine accommodation businesses and roughly 572 beds, according to a November 2023 information sheet from Zermatt Tourism. It is often cheaper than Zermatt, though we do not quote rates. The shuttle train takes 12 minutes. It runs every 20 minutes from 5:55 am to 9:55 pm, hourly after that until about 1 am, and through the night at weekends. A return costs CHF 17.20, and the Swiss Travel Pass and GA need no ticket.
Randa is 20 to 23 minutes from Zermatt by train and 5 minutes from Täsch. It is the start of the walk to the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge, 494 metres long. We name no hotel in Randa because we found no reliable source.
Driving? Park at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch with 2,100 covered spaces and take the shuttle. Our Täsch guide explains the details.

Best time to visit →Where to stay in Zermatt: frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Zermatt?
For most first visits, the village centre. You walk to the Gornergrat Railway and the Matterhorn Express, and the Matterhorn Museum is close. If you value quiet more, look at the mountain hotels.
Is it cheaper to stay in Täsch?
Often, but we do not quote prices. Add the shuttle: CHF 17.20 return per person per day, free with a Swiss Travel Pass or GA. For short stays the saving may be small.
Which Zermatt hotels have Matterhorn views?
It depends on the room. The Riffelhaus 1853 on the Riffelberg and the Riffelalp Resort 2222 m sit on the mountain above the village. Ask the hotel about the orientation of your room.
Can I stay on the Gornergrat?
Yes, at the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, with 22 rooms and 44 beds. The railway is closed from 2 to 14 November 2026, so confirm access with the hotel for those days.
Do I need a car if I stay in Zermatt?
No. Zermatt is car-free. Park at the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch and take the shuttle train, or arrive by train from Visp.
