Zermatt Tours & Day Trips

Zermatt is a long way from Zurich or Geneva, so the real question is whether a guided day trip beats a train ticket and a lift ticket you buy yourself. This guide compares the options and shows what to check.

Zermatt tours: six ways to do it

You can see Zermatt on a guided day trip from Zurich, Geneva or Bern, on your own with train and lift tickets, on the Glacier Express, or from the air. This page does not list tour operators or tour prices. It explains the types, what they cost in time and what to check in a description before you book.

The distances decide most of it. By train, Zurich HB to Zermatt takes about 3 hours 15 minutes with a change in Visp, Geneva about 3 hours 45 minutes and Bern about 2 hours 10 minutes. A day trip from Zurich therefore means roughly 6.5 hours on trains and a few hours in the mountains, and from Geneva about 7.5 hours of travel.

Tickets without a tour

Adult return fares from Zermatt. The season is shown because the operators publish winter and summer separately.

TicketWinter 2026/27Summer 2027Notes
Gornergrat RailwayCHF 102–Summer 2027 fare not yet published; 50 % with Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass
Matterhorn Glacier ParadiseCHF 104CHF 138Ice palace included; afternoon ticket CHF 84 in winter and CHF 110 in summer 2027
Peak Pass, 1 dayCHF 190CHF 246Covers all main lifts; discount cards give only 25 %
Peak2Peak, Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat in one dayCHF 165–December 2026 to April 2027; the Gornergrat railway page lists CHF 156, so compare both
Glacier Express, Zermatt–St. Moritz, 2nd class, one wayCHF 220–CHF 166 ticket plus CHF 54 reservation; no trains until 4 December 2026

If you ride two or three of the big lifts on one day, the Peak Pass is the cheaper route if you have no discount card. With a Half Fare Card or Swiss Travel Pass, single tickets at 50 % can win. For a single viewpoint, a normal return ticket is cheaper. Whether a tour includes the lift ticket changes its real price, so read the description line by line.

What to check in any Zermatt tour

Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.

The lift ticket

Some day trips include the Gornergrat or Glacier Paradise ticket, others offer it as an option or not at all. A tour without the ticket is cheap on paper and expensive once you add CHF 102 or CHF 104 in winter 2026/27.

Time in Zermatt

Subtract the train time, the shuttle and the queue at the lift. On a day trip from Zurich you may have only a few hours in the mountains. Ask how many hours you get at the top.

Closures this autumn

The Gornergrat Railway is closed from 2 to 14 November 2026, so a tour in that period cannot include it. The Glacier Express does not run until 4 December. Check the dates before you pick a trip.

The weather rule

Clouds can hide the Matterhorn completely. Look for free cancellation or rebooking, and look at the webcams in the morning before you commit to a lift ticket.

The last stretch

Cars stop in Täsch, five kilometres short of the village. A shuttle train runs every 20 minutes and takes 12 minutes. A return costs CHF 17.20, free with a Swiss Travel Pass. From 12 October to 8 November 2026 the SBB timetable shows a replacement bus between Visp and Täsch.

Helicopter flights

Several operators offer sightseeing flights near the Matterhorn. We do not compare them here and give no prices. Flights depend on the weather, so ask about cancellation and the length of the flight in the air.

Which option fits you

Four common situations and a suggestion for each.

Staying in Zermatt for several nights: buy lift tickets or a Peak Pass yourself. Seeing Zermatt in one day from a city: a guided trip or your own train and one lift ticket. Interested in the railway itself: the Glacier Express, in the running season. Short on time but flexible: wait for a clear forecast and book a day ahead.

Zermatt tours: frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Zermatt possible from Zurich?

Yes. The train takes about 3 hours 15 minutes each way with a change in Visp, so you spend roughly 6.5 hours travelling. It works as a long day with one lift ride, not as a relaxed visit.

Is it cheaper to go on a tour or to buy tickets myself?

It depends on what the tour includes. A return to the Gornergrat costs CHF 102 in winter 2026/27 and the Glacier Paradise CHF 104. A tour that bundles these with the transport can save the planning, but not necessarily money.

Do I need to book the Glacier Express in advance?

A seat reservation is compulsory for everyone and costs CHF 54 in first and second class, even with a Swiss Travel Pass. The train does not run from 11 October to 4 December 2026.

Can I fly over the Matterhorn?

Sightseeing flights exist, but this guide neither compares operators nor quotes prices. Check the cancellation rule and the flight time in the description.

Which tour works in November?

The Gornergrat Railway is closed from 2 to 14 November 2026 and the Glacier Express does not run, but the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise stays open. A tour built around the Glacier Paradise is the safer choice.
